ABOUT THE ARTIST
I'm like a flower.
I must turn my head
Toward the sun
Or I will die.
For me, art and music
Are the sun.
- Susan Christensen
Susan ( Heckbert ) Christensen is from Summerside, Prince Edward Island. She has been interested in art and creativity since her early childhood. Largely self-taught, she has studied many art books, both instructional and critical. In 1997 Susan took a year to travel North America to study art. Her year on the road included extended stops at The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa; The National Galleries in Washington, D.C. and The Vancouver Art Gallery ( special focus on Emily Carr ). Her resulting works include drawings, watercolors, oils, acrylics and prints.
Since 1995 much of Susan's work has drawn larger audiences, appearing in Japan ( P.E.I. Printmakers' Show ), at the Confederation Center Art Gallery, and at the Gallery in the Art Guild. She has participated in Canada Council Projects through the Printmakers' Council of P.E.I..
Susan's travels have enabled her to appreciate the beauty and serenity of her Island home. Susan has written for Art's Atlantic magazine and has been actively involved in the local art scene. She points to local artists, Henry Purdy, Lindee Climo and Debra James Perceval as particularly helpful in her development.
Susan's isolated home reflects her values in art. She lives one mile down a canopied country lane surrounded by nature, with hardwoods and hundreds of Lady Slippers ( a rather rare and special flower ). This solitude with nature evokes the essence of her inspiration: an exploration of her personal response to the beauty around her.
In 1999 Susan opened an art gallery in scenic Stanley Bridge on the north shore of P.E.I.. Her work is on display at Stanley Bridge Studios and other Island galleries.
